Mushroom with vitamin D

  • 11 September 2018

Scelta Mushrooms BV has successfully gained permission from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to use the status of ‘novel food’. In line with the regulation (EU) 2018/1011 of July 17 2018, Scelta has developed a method that released vitamin D2 in mushrooms. This vitamin is naturally available in mushrooms. The main function of Vitamin D is to maintain the balance of calcium that’s needed for, among others, strong bones. Additionally, it plays a part in strengthening the immune system and maintain and repairing DNA.

Champignons contain the de provitamin ‘ergosterol’ that, under influence of UVB light, can be converted into vitamin D2. UVB light is part of the natural sunlight. The mushroom itself converts into vitamin D2, there’s nothing added to the product. Growing white mushrooms happens inside and therefore out of reach of sunlight. This is why, during the processing, a UVB treatment is applied to make the vitamin D available. Because the process is inspected and checked, Scelta has influence on how much vitamin D2 is released. Scelta is worldwide the first that applies this technique in processed mushrooms. Other production processes are now prepared to also be enriched with vitamin D, such as mushroom powders and dried mushrooms.
